My monthly listeners oscillates around three million.
Which is mind-boggling for me, it really is. When I started on indie labels like Parasol, I would be amazed if a pressing of 2,000 singles sold out. To be honest, you would have been far safer pressing 1,000 or even 500 unless you wanted your house to be full of unsold WT records.
(Yes, my house is full of unsold White Town 7″s and CDs.)
I would be made up to have 1,000 monthly listeners on Spotify. For me, that’s a successful independent artist. Of course, I’d have to have a straight job to live, that’s in no way enough to live off music.
That’s why I was at Uni in ’97, when Your Woman got to number one. I was preparing for a life of shit office jobs so I could pay my bills enough to keep doing White Town, keep making unpopular, alternative music.
The fact that nearly thirty years later after that one single, I have THREE MILLION people listening to that one song (and my new music too) is fantastical, I am incredulous.
Thank you, whether you’re part of that hardcore of 1,000 or part of the three million.
