The Genius Of Turing

(In response to a thread on Tumblr)

The appalling homophobic hatecrime that was carried out by the British government against Turing must never be forgotten.

If you really want to delve into Turing’s life and also realise the horrendous extent of the straightwashing surrounding his history / erasure from history, please, please read this book:

I can honestly say that this book changed my life and the way I think about both maths and physics. If you’re a science wannabe like me, this book is gentle enough that you can grasp the big concepts. But if you’re a bit more hardcore, you’ll be glad it doesn’t baby the more difficult ideas.

However, the reason I most love this book is that it’s also a book full of love. Love for Turing, love for the beauty of nature but also love of love itself. Inevitably, it is tragic in parts but overall, it’s a celebration of the life of a brilliant gay man who helped defeat world fascism and whose ideas define huge parts of the world we live in now.

1 In Every 625 Americans Has Died Of Covid

I thought, ‘naahh, surely not?’ Soo… off to google and as of 15/3/2021:

So, 534 thousand dead.

Then:

US population 382.2 million. (THIS IS WHERE I WENT WRONG, EVERYONE, I SWAPPED 328 for 382!)

So then, what percent deaths in the US population:

What is that percentage as a fraction?

So, as of today, one in every 769 Americans has died of Covid. Only slightly off the original, tbf, still grimly horrible

( WARNING – I may be wrong as I have dyscalculia, hence all the googling. Please do check my maths!)

THANKFULLY:

God, what a stupid mistake to make… typical of me and numbers! Thanks to sadabeuk, I can now correct my error and:

One in every 625 Americans has died of Covid.
