Mystery Jets

Mystery Jets at the Vic Inn, Derby 13-9-05
“When the cat befriended the mouse, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house…”

On Tuesday, I saw Mystery Jets play the Vic and they were wonderful. I didn’t know any of the songs apart from the current catchy single, ‘You Can’t Fool Me Dennis‘ but that didn’t matter as they played with such passion and energy. Of course, as their singer sings with his real voice, they’re bound to draw lazy Smiths comparisons. But their quirky musical structures are actually far closer to The Monochrome Set. I’d love to hear them cover ‘The Mating Game’ or ‘Jacob’s Ladder.’

Sometimes you see a band and their performance is so natural, so completely un-pretentious that you can’t help but be captivated. That happened on Tuesday for me. It’s so rare to see musicians having fun on stage, not performing in that terribly laboured, robotic, London-ish way most “proper” bands do.

If there’s any justice, Mystery Jets will be bigger than Bloc Party and Franz rolled together. Simply a great pop band.
