We drove home from holiday in Scotland yesterday. The day started with sunshine and a feeling of optimism thanks to the Edinburgh Live8 concert and the news about London winning the Olympic bid.
As we started driving down the A9, a radio report came on stating that some “power surges” had caused explosions on the Tube.
Soon, more radio reports came in. The true horror was revealed as I drove along. After a while, it started to appear on the electronic signs by the side of the road. I’ve never before seen one of these signs say, “AVOID LONDON: AREA CLOSED.” And I hope I never do again.
The drive home took eight hours because of crashes on the M1. We got in and put the TV on.
37 dead. Hundreds injured. Mayhem which makes the IRA look like beginners. Attacks which deliberately targeted soft, civilian targets. Attacks designed to cause maximum terror. What kind of mind can value human life so little? How twisted is the thought process that can justify these murders?
I didn’t sleep much last night. I was worried about the family I have in London. They’re safe but I still had nightmares about bombings. I shouldn’t have watched so much TV news.
My thoughts go out to the families of the bereaved and injured.
