I haven’t been in Derby Cathedral for years. Not surprising as I’ve been a conscious atheist since the age of eight. Like all old religious buildings, there’s a great sense of the flow of history in the cathedral. It’s populated by little insets and plaques commemorating people long since dead and seeing these dedications always gives me a good reminder of my own mortality and insignificance. It’s well worth a visit even if, like me, you’re not buying into any form of afterlife. Plus, I’m sure they’d be glad of any donations to help with the upkeep of the magnificent building.
