The Pharcyde
The Pharcyde. Definitely nutters.

Jean Claude van DAAAMN but there’s a lot of great hip hop around at the mo. Athletic Mic League, Proof, Mr. Complex, Main Flow, Mykill Miers… well, you get what I mean. Bizarrely, tonight’s top new tune was down to either The Pharcyde or 7L & Esoteric, and both their albums are released today/tomorrow (July 13th). What can I say – you’ll just have to buy them both. I’ve been a Pharcyde fan for years and they’ve been responsible for gold-plated hip hop classics like ‘Runnin’ and ‘Passin Me By.’ ‘Illusions,’ the track I played tonight, is off their new album ‘Humboldt Beginnings.’ If you’re of a certain age, you’ll immediately recognise the track it’s based on. Near brought a tear to my eye… sniff…

The best old track tonight was Tom Paxton’s ‘Lyndon Johnson Told The Nation.’ The lyrics have a renewed resonance now we live under the rule of Butcher Blair and his war criminal buddies. Released the year before I was born, this song is still as sharp as ever. Where have all the protest singers gone?
