Stop Bush!

Well, what an amazing and exhausting day!

Keyvan met me off the Derby train at 12.30 and we headed over to the march start area on Malet Street. I wanted to get there early so I could grab some food before the march…

…but when we got there, people were already congregating, as you can see in the first two pics.

It wasn’t that long a march but it was so tiring because we were going so slowly. And it was quite twisty-turny: we crossed the Thames twice.

I was just happy so many people had turned up to show Bush how a lot of British feel about his and Blair’s ‘special relationship.’ As always, the police estimate on the day was ridiculously low but I heard newscasters estimating 200,000 people. From the slowness and size of the march, I’d say this is pretty accurate, comparing it to the other demos I’ve been on this year.

When I got home, the news was full of the Istanbul bombings. It’s good to know how well the war against terror has worked – Bush and Blair’s actions are of course totally vindicated by the corpses in the Turkish rubble. I’m sure the huge increase in support, funding and operations of Al Quaeda has nothing at all to do with the bloody attack on Iraq.

No. Not at all.

Bin Laden must be thanking God for giving him a leader such as George Bush. Those of us, like the 200,000 or so in London are less pleased.

Stop Bush

I nicked this from the Common Dreams site but it’s actually from The Center For American Progress. I was going to write my own rant about Bush’s nauseating speech today, but the quote below says it all.

CLAIM: “The tradition of free speech exercised with enthusiasm is alive and well here in London. We have that at home too. They now have that right in Baghdad as well.”
– President Bush, 11/19/03

FACT: “As criticism of his authority appeared in Iraqi media, occupying authority chief L. Paul Bremer III placed controls on Iraqi Media Network content and clamped down on the independent media in Iraq, closing down some Iraqi-run newspapers and radio and television stations.”
– American Prospect, 10/1/03

FACT: “American soldiers handcuffed and firmly wrapped masking tape around an Iraqi man’s mouth after they arrested him for speaking out against occupation troops. Asked why the man had been arrested and put into the back of a Humvee vehicle on Tahrir Square, the commanding officer told Reuters at the scene: ‘This man has been detained for making anti-coalition statements.’ He refused to say what the man said.”
– Reuters, 11/11/03

FACT: The British government is spending $9 million to keep Bush away from protestors.
– Washington Post, 11/19/03

Tomorrow, I hope the stage-managed propaganda machine of Bush’s visit will be wrecked by the Stop The War Coalition.

I’m dragging my fat arse down there. Are you?

Another good week this week. I got some very cool requests – The Cardiacs, no less! I played a handful of repeats this week from last week but as they’re all brand-new tracks, I’m not that arsed. I managed to stay clear of Mars Volta, Nas and Death Cab (I like all those artists, but I’ve played them too often recently).

Next week I must play more new hip hop and more glitch.

I managed to cram in a lot of very new tracks this week. A lot of these are free downloads from the excellent Pitchfork and some of them are off the free CDs that come with CMJ New Music Monthly, one of my fave music mags.

The early part of the evening was the best bit, I feel. I chickened-out a bit towards the end and put more popular requests on (like AC/DC and Nas). But what the hell, DJing is always a compromise. And as much as I want to play new music, if it was all new, people would get very bored and not come back again.

This week, you heard:

06 The Bronx – False Alarm
06 Earth Crisis__Biomachines
03 Die Fantastischen Vier_Sie Ist Weg
Cable – Whisper firing line

I had a better night tonight than last week because I didn’t play as many repeats, only two, I think. My god, Mars Volta are popular at the moment!

‘Watch This’ off the new Swollen Members album went down very well too. I’m hoping it’s going to be their big pop crossover, like the Black Eyed Peas had with ‘Where Is The Love.’ (If you order the album online, make sure you get it from Amazon Canada where it comes with a brilliant DVD at a tiny price.)

I had a couple of people ask me about the Weakerthans track and a few people looking bewildered when I played Hrvatski. Funny, I think of that as being a very accessible, poppy track. 🙂

Tonight, there wasn’t enough electronic, glitchy stuff or pre-1960s music. I’ll try and do better next week. I was pleased that one lad came up and asked for The Notwist. Yay! Also, that a couple of people say they check out these playlists I post up…so, here’s what you heard:
